Doc Hastings was elected to the Washington House of Representatives in 1978 and served four full terms before retiring in 1987.
In 1992, he was the Republican nominee for the vacant 4th District U.S. House Seat. He lost in the general election, receiving 49 percent of the vote against Democrat Jay Inslee. He defeated Inslee in 1994 with 52 percent.
Hastings was re-elected in 1996 with 52 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Rick Locke. In 1998, Hastings was re-elected, defeating Democrat Gordon Pross with 69 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2000 with 61 percent of the vote.
In 2002, he was re-elected with 67 percent of the vote. He is seeking another term in 2004.
