Biography:
Chris Haugen was born in Oakland in 1946 and raised in Berkeley. He received bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from Stanford University. He earned another master's in education from Stanford in 1985.
Haugen worked as a civil engineer for the Army from 1968 to 1973 and then spent 10 years with Young Life, a Christian outreach program for high school students. He worked for a software company from 1982 to 1984 and then started teaching high school. He opened a Christian high school in Sunnyvale, Calif., in 1991 and has worked there since.
Haugen has been politically active since the 1980s and a Republican since 1996. He ran for Congress in 1998.
Haugen has been married for 35 years and has two children. He has taught for almost two decades.
