Biography:

J.D. Hayworth was born in High Point, N.C., and resides in Scottsdale, Ariz. Hayworth received a bachelor's degree in speech communications and political science from North Carolina State Universityin 1980.

Hayworth worked as a sportscaster in Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Greenville, S.C., and in Cincinnati, and Phoenix.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1994.

Hayworth and his wife, Mary, have three children.


Past Campaigns:

In 1994, J.D. Hayworth defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Karan English with 54 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 1996 with 48 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Steve Owens. Hayworth defeated Owens again in 1998, winning 52 percent of the vote to Owens' 45 percent.

He ran for re-election in 2000 against Democratic candidate Larry R. Nelson of San Manuel, Ariz., and won 60 to 37 percent.

In 2002, he defeated Democratic candidate Craig Columbus of Payson, Ariz., for re-election.
