Joel Hefley was elected to the U.S. House in 1986 with 70 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat William C. Story for the seat vacated by Kenneth Kramer.
He was re-elected in 2000 with 83 percent of the vote and in 2002 with 69 percent of the vote. In 2004, he easily defeated Mike Payton in the primary and faces Democrat Fred Hardee in the general election.
Before coming to Congress, Hefley served in the Colorado Legislature. Hefley was elected to the Colorado House in 1976, serving from 1977 to 1979.
He was elected to the Colorado Senate in 1978 and re-elected in 1982, serving from 1979 to 1987.
