Biography:

Stephanie Herseth grew up on her family's farm in northeast South Dakota. She was educated at Georgetown University and the Georgetown University Law Center.

She served on the law center faculty, interned for the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission in Pierre, served as law clerk for a federal judge in Pierre and Aberdeen, and clerked for a judge on the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Baltimore.

Herseth taught political science at South Dakota State University in 2003 and headed up the South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation.

She ran for South Dakota's House seat in 2002, but lost to Bill Janklow, who served until 2003 when he was forced to resign after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter stemming from a traffic crash.

Herseth won the long-held Republican seat over GOP contender Larry Diedrich in a special election in June 2004. She took over the seat just two days after being elected.

Stephanie Herseth won the seat in a special election in 2004 against Republican Larry Diedrich. It marked her second run for the U.S. House. She lost to Bill Janklow in 2002 by 7 percentage points.
