Maurice Hinchey served in the New York Assembly, 1974-92. He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 51 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Bob Moppert. In 1994, he was re-elected with 49 percent of the vote, defeating Moppert again. He was re-elected again in 1996 with 55 percent of the vote against Republican Sue Wittig. Hinchey was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Bud Walker with 62 percent of the vote.
In the 2000 election he again defeated Moppert with 61 percent of the vote.
He defeated Republican Eric Hall in 2002 with 64 percent of the vote.
