Biography:

Peter Hoekstra was born in Groningen, the Netherlands, and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1957. He resides in Holland, Mich., where he grew up. He graduated from Holland Christian School in 1971. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Hope College, a local liberal arts school, in 1975. He obtained a master's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan in 1977.

He went to work for Herman Miller Inc., a furniture and office products company in Holland and rose to vice president of marketing.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992. Hoekstra and his wife, Diane, have three children.


Past Campaigns:

Peter Hoekstra was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 63 percent, defeating Democrat John Miltner. He was re-elected in 1994 with 75 percent, defeating Democrat Marcus Hoover.

In 1996, he was re-elected with 66 percent of the vote against Democrat Dan Kruszynski. In 1998, Hoekstra defeated Democrat Bob Shrauger with 69 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2000 with 64 percent of the vote.

In 2002, he was re-elected with 70 percent of the vote.
