Biography:

Mike Honda was born in Stockton, Calif., and has lived in Santa Clara County for more than 40 years. He and his family were interned during World War II and returned to San Jose in 1953. Honda interrupted college to join the newly created Peace Corps.

After serving for two years in El Salvador, he returned to San Jose State University and earned a bachelor's degree in biology and Spanish in 1968. He received a master's degree in education in 1974.

Honda was a public school vice principal and principal from 1975 to 1986 and served as a board member of the San Jose Unified School District from 1981-1990. He was elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in 1990 and served as a supervisor until he was elected to the state Assembly in 1996 to represent the 23rd district in Silicon Valley.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 2000.

Honda's wife, Jeanne, died in 2004 from ovarian cancer. He has two children.


Past Campaigns:

Mike Honda was elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in 1990 to replace retiring Susanne Wilson and was re-elected in 1994.

In 1996, Honda was elected to the state assembly, trouncing Republican Lisa Sutton with 73.4 percent of the votes. He was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Patrick Du Long with 75.8 percent of the votes.

In the open March 2000 primary for the U.S. House, Honda led in a Democratic field of five, winning 40 percent of the vote.

He was elected in 2000 with 54 percent of the vote. He defeated Republican Linda Hermann in the 2002 election with 66 percent of the vote.

Honda was uncontested in 2004.
