James Hopson was born and raised in Lufkin, Texas. He earned a bachelors degree from Dallas Baptist University in 1970, a masters degree in Accounting and Taxation at the University of Houston in 1981 and a doctorate in jurisprudence from Southern Methodist University Law School.
He served in the U.S. Army Special Forces and received a medical discharge.
Hopson has been a regional manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone, an accountant, CEO of a small drilling and operating company, college dean and professor and an author.
While serving as CEO of Vintage Oil & Gas Co., Hopson was a tax professor from 1983-1987 at Stephen F. Austin State University in East Texas.
From 1987-1989, Hopson was an associate professor teaching taxes and accounting at Texas A&M University at Kingsville. From 1989-1992, he taught taxes and chaired the Department of Business Administration at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
From 1992-1995, Hopson was Dean of the College of Management and a tax professor at the Lawrence Technological University.
He currently has a law practice focusing on estate, asset protection, tax and financial planning, corporate and family limited partnership planning, and IRS representation.
