Biography:

John N. Hostettler was born in Evansville, Ind., but grew up amid the farms of Posey County in Indiana's southernmost tip. He resides in Wadesville, Ind.

He graduated from North Posey Senior High School in 1979 and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with an engineering degree in 1983. He went to work as a performance engineer at Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Co.'s power plant in Warrick County. His only previous involvement with politics amounted to voting as a Republican in primary and general elections.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1994. He and his wife, Elizabeth Ann, have four children.


Past Campaigns:

John Hostettler defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Frank McCloskey 52 percent to 48 percent in 1994. He was re-elected in 1996 with 50 percent of the vote against Democrat Jonathan Weizapfel, who had 48 percent.

In 1998, Hostettler defeated Democrat Gail Riecken 52 to 46 percent. In 2000, he was re-elected with 53 percent of the vote.

In 2002, he defeated Democrat Bryan Hartke with 52 percent of the vote. Hartke had 46 percent of the vote.
