Inslee practiced law in Selah, a small community near Yakima in central Washington. Inslee served in the Washington House from 1988-92. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992, representing the 4th congressional District in Eastern Washington, but was defeated in 1994.

He lost a bid for the Democratic nomination for governor in 1996 and spent two years as regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, before leaving in 1998 to campaign for the 1st Congressional District in the Seattle suburbs. He won that race.

Inslee and his wife, Trudi, have three sons.

Past Campaigns:

Jay Inslee served two terms in the state House, 1988-92, and was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 51 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Doc Hastings for Washington's 4th District seat. Hastings, however, ousted him in 1994 with 52 percent of the vote.

After losing the Democratic nomination for governor to Gary Locke in 1996, Inslee briefly retired from politics. But in 1998, Inslee ran in a new congressional district, ousting Republican 1st District Rep. Rick White, 51 percent to 43 percent. Inslee was re-elected in 2000 with 55 percent of the vote. In 2002, he won 55.6 percent of the vote compared to Republican challenger Dan McDonald's 41.7 percent.

In 2002, he won re-election with 56 percent of the vote.
