Nancy Johnson was elected to the U.S. House in 1982 with 52 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat William E. Curry Jr.
Johnson was re-elected to five consecutive terms, defeating Democrat Paul Kulas in 1990 with 74 percent of the vote and Democrat Eugene Slason in 1992 with 73 percent of the vote. She defeated Democrat Charlotte Koskoff with 64 percent in 1994. She was re-elected in 1996 with 50 percent of the vote, defeating Koskoff, who had 49 percent.
In 1998, Johnson defeated Koskoff for a third time, winning with 59 percent of the vote.
She won re-election in 2000 with 63 percent of the vote against Paul Valenti.
She was re-elected in 2002 with 54 percent of the vote.
