Dale Kildee was elected to the U.S. House in 1976 with 70 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Robin Widgery. He was re-elected to 12 consecutive terms, defeating Republican David Morrill in 1990 with 68 percent of the vote and Republican Megan O'Neill in 1992 with 54 percent of the vote. He defeated O'Neill again in 1994 with 51 percent.
In 1996, he was re-elected with 59 percent of the vote against Republican Patrick Nowak. Kildee defeated Republican Tom McMillin with 56 percent of the vote in 1998 to win a 12th consecutive term in the House.
In 2000, he was re-elected with 61 percent of the vote over Republican Grant Garrett, an automotive executive from Auburn Hills.
He was re-elected in 2002 with 92 percent of the vote over token opposition.
