Peter King was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992. He has been re-elected by increasingly wide margins every term since.
In 2002, he was re-elected with 72 percent of the vote.
Before arriving in Congress, King was elected Nassau County comptroller in 1981. He was elected to the Hempstead Town Council in 1978 and ran unsuccessfully in 1986 for state attorney general.
