Biography:

John Kline was born in Allentown, Penn., in 1947 to a stay-at-home mother and newspaper reporter father. The family later moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where his father bought a small hometown newspaper and his mother managed the local symphony orchestra.

Kline received a bachelor's degree in biology from Rice University, then began a 25-year career in the Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam and Somalia and commanded Marine Aircraft Group 16, the largest airgroup in the corps. He also was the program development officer at Headquarters Marine Corps, where he was responsible for developing a $50 billion resource allocation plan.

Kline also has served presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan as a military aide. He retired at the rank of colonel in 1994. He received a master's degree in public administration from Shippensburg University.

He and his wife, Vicky, have two children and four grandchildren.


Past Campaigns:

After two narrow defeats running for Congress in 1998 and 2000, John Kline won in 2002 with 53 percent of the vote, compared with Bill Luther's 42.2 percent.
