Biography:

James T. Kolbe was born in Evanston, Ill., and lives in Tucson, Ariz. He graduated from the U.S. Capitol Page School in Washington, in 1960. He received a bachelor's degree in political science in 1965 from Northwestern University and an MBA in 1967 from Stanford University.

Kolbe served in the Navy from 1967 to 1969, with duty in Vietnam. He was special assistant to Illinois Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie from 1972 to 1973. He was vice president of Wood Canyon Corp. of Sonoita, Ariz., and was a consultant on real estate development. He served in the Arizona Senate from 1977 to 1982.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1984.

Kolbe is divorced and has no children. He is one of three openly gay members of Congress.


Past Campaigns:

Jim Kolbe was elected to the U.S. House in 1984 with 51 percent of the vote, ousting incumbent Democratic Rep. James F. McNulty Jr. Kolbe is now in his 10th term.

In 2002, he defeated Democratic candidate Mary Judge Ryan with 63 percent of the vote.

Kolbe lost a 1982 U.S. House race to McNulty with 48 percent of the vote.

Kolbe served in the Arizona Senate from 1977 to 1982.
