Paul W. Johnson was born in 1941 to a minister and a homemaker.
He has bachelor's and master's degrees in forestry from the University of Michigan.
Since 1974, the Johnson family has owned and operated Oneota Slopes Farm near Decorah, Iowa. The farm has included dairy, corn, soybeans, hay, beef cattle, sheep, and Christmas trees.
Johnson served three terms in the Iowa State Legislature, from 1984 to 1990.
He is married to Patricia Johnson, Associate Professor Emerita of Social Work at Luther College. They have three adult children and five granddaughters.
