Tom Lantos was elected to the U.S. House in 1980 with 46 percent of the vote, ousting incumbent Republican Rep. Bill Royer. He was re-elected to five consecutive terms, defeating Republican Bill Quraishi in 1990 with 66 percent of the vote.
He won re-election in 1992 with 69 percent of the vote defeating Republican Jim Tomlin. He defeated Republican Deborah Wilder in 1994 with 67 percent of the vote.
In 1996, he defeated Republican Storm Jenkins with 72 percent of the vote. Lantos won a tenth House term in 1998 defeating Republican Robert Evans with 74 percent of the vote. 2000 was another landslide year for Lantos. He beat Garza with 74 percent of the vote.
He was re-elected again in 2002, defeating Republican Michael Moloney with 68 percent of the vote.
