Sheila Jackson Lee won two terms to the Houston city council.
In March 1994 she defeated incumbent Rep. Craig Washington in the Democratic primary for the 18th District U.S. House seat.
She defeated Republican Jerry Burley in the general election with 72 percent of the vote. She won re-election in 1996, defeating Republican Larry White with 77 percent of the vote.
Jackson Lee was re-elected in 1998 without major party opposition. She was re-elected in 2000 with 77 percent of the vote.
She won re-election in 2002 with 77 percent of the vote.
She faced no opposition in the 2004 primary or general election.
