Biography:

Graham Leonard is a Kingsport, Tenn., retiree who has lived much of his life in the Middle East as a teacher.

He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee, a master's degree in literacy and journalism from Syracuse University and a PhD in Education from Harvard University.

During World War II, he was in the U.S. Naval Reserve boot camp and pre-flight program at Milligan College.

He worked for Volunteers for International Development, part of UNESCO, in Egypt from 1959 to 1960, then served as dean of students and an associate professor at American University of Beirut from 1960 to 1963.

From 1963 to 1965, he was assistant to the Director of Education at the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. He later tought math and French at U.S. Air Force schools in England and wrote several English textbooks for Arab World, Longmans Green, England.

From 1968 to 1969, Leonard was a post-doctoral traveling fellow of Harvard at Oxford University in England. He then served as an advisor on education to UNESCO in Paris, and also taught graduate students part-time at the University of Paris at Vincennes, France.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Leonard hel various positions, including teaching at the State University of New York and working as an educational advisor to several groups. He completed his doctoral dissertation at Harvard and was a visiting professor at the University of Beijing in China.

Since 1996, he has delivered lectures on Islam and the Middle East.

Leonard is divorced and has two daughters.
