Biography:

Sander M. Levin was born in Detroit, and resides in Royal Oak, Mich. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1952, a master's degree in international relations from Columbia University in 1954 and a law degree from Harvard University in 1957. He practiced law in Michigan, 1957-64, and served on the Oakland County Board of Supervisors, 1961-64. He served in the state Senate, 1965-70, where he was minority leader for one session. He was Michigan Democratic party chairman, 1968-69. He practiced corporate and commercial law in the Detroit area, 1971-74, and taught at Wayne State University in that time.

Levin was a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard in 1975. He was assistant administrator of the Agency for International Development, 1977-81.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 1982 and was re-elected to 10 consecutive terms. In 1992, Levin ran for the 12th District seat; he previously served in the 17th District.

Levin and his wife, Victoria, have four children.


Past Campaigns:

Sander Levin was elected to the U.S. House in 1982, defeating Republican Gerald Rosen with 67 percent of the vote. Levin was re-elected to five consecutive terms, defeating Republican Blaine Lankford in 1990 with 70 percent of the vote and Republican John Pappageorge in 1992 with 54 percent of the vote. He defeated Pappageorge again in 1994 with 52 percent. He defeated Pappageorge again in 1996 with 58 percent.

In 1998, Levin defeated Republican Leslie Touma with 56 percent of the vote. Levin lost narrowly in two Michigan gubernatorial races to Republican William Milliken in 1970 and 1974. He was elected to the state Senate, 1965-70.

In 2000 he was re-elected with 64 percent of the vote over management consultant Bart Baron.

He was re-elected in 2002 with 68 percent of the vote.
