Sander Levin was elected to the U.S. House in 1982, defeating Republican Gerald Rosen with 67 percent of the vote. Levin was re-elected to five consecutive terms, defeating Republican Blaine Lankford in 1990 with 70 percent of the vote and Republican John Pappageorge in 1992 with 54 percent of the vote. He defeated Pappageorge again in 1994 with 52 percent. He defeated Pappageorge again in 1996 with 58 percent.
In 1998, Levin defeated Republican Leslie Touma with 56 percent of the vote. Levin lost narrowly in two Michigan gubernatorial races to Republican William Milliken in 1970 and 1974. He was elected to the state Senate, 1965-70.
In 2000 he was re-elected with 64 percent of the vote over management consultant Bart Baron.
He was re-elected in 2002 with 68 percent of the vote.
