Biography:

John Lewis was born in Troy, Ala., and lives in Atlanta. He received a master's degree in theology from the American Baptist Seminary in 1961 and a bachelor's degree from Fisk University in 1963.

He served as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from 1963 to 1966. He headed the Atlanta-based Voter Education Project from 1970 to 1976. He was director of ACTION from 1977 to 1980.

In 1981, he was elected to the Atlanta City Council, serving from 1982 to 1986. He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1986.

Lewis and his wife, Lillian, have one child.


Past Campaigns:

John Lewis was elected to the U.S. House in 1986 with 75 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Portia Scott. He has easily won re-election ever since. He defeated Republican Dale Dixon in 1994 with 69 percent of the vote. He was unopposed in 1996. In 1998, he defeated his namesake, John Lewis, a Republican, for re-election with 79 percent of the vote.

Lewis was re-elected in 2000 with 77 percent of the vote against Republican Hank Schwab Jr., an architect. He faced no opposition in November 2002.

He made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. House in 1977. Lewis served two terms on Atlanta City Council from 1982 to 1986.
