Biography:

Mark Leyva was born to Anthony and Sally Leyva on Oct. 1, 1959, in East Chicago, Ind. He graduated from Highland High School in 1978, and worked at the Inland Steel plant from 1979-85.

After several layoffs, he got into the carpenty trade and became a union carpenter in 1989. He has a son, Mark Leyva II, who is based in Fort Campbell, Ky., after serving five months in Iraq.


Past Campaigns:

Mark Leyva ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination in Indiana's 1st District in 1998 and 2000. He won the GOP primary in 2002, but lost to U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky in the general election, getting 31 percent of the vote.
