John Linder ran for the U.S. House in 1990 and was defeated by Democratic incumbent Rep. Ben Jones, gaining 48 percent of the vote. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992, defeating Democrat Cathey Steinberg. He was re-elected in 1994 with 58 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Comer Yates.
In 1996, he was re-elected with 64 percent of the vote against Democrat Tommy Stephenson. In 1998, he defeated DemocratVincent Littman with 69 percent of the vote, then did the same in the 2000 primary when Littman switched to the Republican Party.
Linder ran unopposed in the November 2000 election and faced only token opposition in November 2002.
The major challenge for him came in the primary where, because of redistricting, he was forced to run against fellow incumbent Republican Bob Barr. Although polls showed it a dead heat going into the final day, Linder won easily.
Prior to his congressional service, Linder served 14 years in the Georgia House.
