Nita Lowey was first elected to the U.S. House in 1988 with just over 50 percent of the vote, defeating two-term Republican Rep. Joseph DioGuardi. She was re-elected in 1990, defeating Republican Glenn Bellitto with 62 percent of the vote.
She won re-election again in 1992 with 55 percent of the vote, again defeating DioGuardi. She defeated Republican Andrew Hartzell Jr. in 1994 with 57 percent of the vote. In 1996, she received 63 percent of the vote against Republican Kerry Katsorhis.
Lowey was re-elected in 1998 without major party opposition and in 2000 she pulled 67 percent of the vote against Republican John Vonglis.
She faced no GOP opposition in 2002.
