Biography:

Born on Sept. 22, 1946, Daniel Edward Lungren grew up in politics. As a child in Southern California, then Vice President Richard Nixon was a friend of his parents and an occasional visitor to their Long Beach home.

At age 6, Lungren was working the street, handing out pamphlets for a neighbor's congressional campaign.

"It was something which was part of growing up. I worked precincts, I stuffed envelops, I did telephone banks when I was in high school," Lungren said.

He graduated from Norte Dame University with a degree in English, and went on to Georgetown University to earn his law degree after working on the Nixon campaign in California.

In 1976, U.S. Rep. Craig Hosmer, the neighbor for whom Lungren walked precincts at age 6, decided to retire. Lungren, age 29, entered the race, but lost by less than 2 percent to Democrat Mark Hannaford. Two years later, Lungren defeated Hannaford in his second try for Congress and served 5 terms in the U.S. House.

Past Campaigns:

Dan Lungren ran unsuccessfully against Democratic Gray Davis for governor in 1998, a disastrous move that short-circuited his career.

But in the March 2004 Congressional primary, Lungren won a come-from-behind victory in the GOP primary over state Sen. Rico Oller. The race was a fierce, three-way battle for the chance to replace retiring Republican Rep. Doug Ose against Ose's sister, Mary.
