Biography:
Cynthia Matthews was born in San Bernardino, Calif., in 1963 and spent her youth living in Alaska and Hawaii.
She attended a Christian missionary high school in Kona, Hawaii, and graduated at age 17. During the 1980s, she worked as a heavy equipment operator.
In the 1990s, she became an environmental activist after testing soil and water at construction sites and becoming aware of California's pollution problems. She resides in La Verne, Calif.
