Carolyn McCarthy was elected to the U.S. House in 1996 with 57 percent of the vote against Republican Rep. Daniel Frisa. She was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Greg Becker with 52 percent of the vote. She faced Becker again in 2000 general election and won with 60 percent of the vote.
Frisa launched a bid to challenge McCarthy again in 2002 but he was defeated in a three-way GOP primary. She defeated face opthalmologist Marilyn O'Grady in the general election with 56 percent of the vote.
