Biography:
McColgan grew up in Boston and received a bachelor's degree with majors in government and philosophy from William and Mary University in 1977. He spent the junior year of college at the University of Reading in England.
He served in the federal VISTA volunteer program in Oklahoma before moving to southern Oregon in 1979.
He did carpentry work and obtained a general contractor license in 1980 and operates a home construction business. He returned to school and obtained a teaching certficate after completing a fifth-year education program at Southern Oregon University.
He taught at an elementary school from 1997 to 1998 before returning to his contracting business. McColgan was a county coordinator for the Michael Dukakis presidential campaign in 1988.
Past Campaigns:
John McColgan unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination for the same congressional seat in 2002, getting about 35 percent of the vote in a two-way race.
