Biography:

James McCrery was born in Shreveport, La., where he still resides He received a bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1971 and a law degree from Louisiana State University in 1975. He practiced law from 1975 to 1978.

He was assistant city attorney in Shreveport from 1979 to 1980 and served as the legislative director to then-U.S. Rep. Buddy Roemer from 1981 to 1984.

He worked for the Georgia Pacific Corp. from 1984 to 1988.

McCrery was elected to the U.S. House in 1988 and is serving his 9th consecutive term.

McCrery and his wife, Johnette, have two children.


Past Campaigns:

Jim McCrery was elected in a U.S. House special election in 1988 with 31 percent of the vote in a five-way race for the seat given up by Democrat Buddy Roemer.

McCrery was re-elected to a full term in 1988 and won in 1990 with 55 percent of the vote. In 1992, he defeated Democrat Jerry Huckaby with 63 percent of the vote.

He was re-elected in 1994 with 80 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Paul Henry Kidd. He was uncontested for re-election in 1996 and 1998.

He won with 70 percent of the vote in 2000. He was re-elected in 2002 with 72 percent of the vote.
