Biography:

Howard "Buck" McKeon was born and raised in Tujunga, Calif. where he graduated from Verdugo Hills High School in 1956. A Mormon, he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints before heading to college.

While studying at Brigham Young University, he embarked on what he called a "temporary hiatus," during which he got married, raised a family and went into business in Santa Clarita.

McKeon and his four brothers ran a clothing business called Howard & Phil's Western Wear Inc., which their parents started with a single store. It became a chain of 46 outlets in California, Arizona and Nevada. In 1985, McKeon finally received a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry from BYU.

In 1987, he founded Valencia National Bank _ the same year he ran for mayor of Santa Clarita. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992.

McKeon and his wife, Patricia, have six grown children. They live in Santa Clarita, Calif.


Past Campaigns:

Buck McKeon was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 55 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat James Gilmartin. He was re-elected in 1994 with 65 percent, defeating Gilmartin again.

In 1996, McKeon was re-elected with 62 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Diane Trautman. He won a fourth term in 1998, winning without major party opposition. McKeon won again in 2000 with 63 percent of the vote.

He was re-elected in 2002.
