Cynthia McKinney was born in Atlanta, and resides in Lithonia, Ga. Her mother was a nurse at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for almost 40 years. Her father, Billy, is a former Atlanta policeman who served inthe Georgia House of Representatives, beginning in 1973.

McKinney received a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California in 1978. She taught at Clark Atlanta University and at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga.

McKinney is divorced and has one son.

Past Campaigns:

Cynthia McKinney served in the Georgia House, 1988-92. She was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 73 percent of the vote, defeatingRepublican Woodrow Lovett.

She was re-elected in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000. Democrat Denise Majette defeated her in the 2002 primary.

After Majette decided to leave Congress to run for the Senate, McKinney won the 2004 Democratic primary for the seat.
