Cynthia McKinney served in the Georgia House, 1988-92. She was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 73 percent of the vote, defeatingRepublican Woodrow Lovett.
She was re-elected in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000. Democrat Denise Majette defeated her in the 2002 primary.
After Majette decided to leave Congress to run for the Senate, McKinney won the 2004 Democratic primary for the seat.
