Gregory Meeks was elected to the U.S. House in a February 1998 special election to serve the remainder of Democrat Floyd Flake's term. He defeated four candidates, receiving 56 percent of the vote. He was elected to a full term, winning the November 1998 general election without opposition. He was re-elected in 2000 also unopposed.
In the 2002 primary, he easily defeated Queens activist Rey Clarke. He faced no Republican opposition in the general election.
