Biography:

Robert Menendez was born in New York and resides in Hoboken, N.J. He graduated from St. Peter's College in 1976 with degrees in political science and urban studies. He received a law degree from Rutgers University in 1979.

He was elected school trustee for the Union City Board of Education in 1974 and was named the board of education's chief financial officer in 1978. He served in that post until 1982.

He served as mayor of Union City from 1986 to 1992. He was then elected to the state Assembly, where he served from 1987 to 1991, and in the state Senate from 1991 to 1992. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992.

Menendez and his wife, Jane Jacobsen-Menendez, have two children.


Past Campaigns:

In 1986, Robert Menendez was elected mayor of Union City, N.J., and also a state assemblyman from Hudson County.

In March 1991 he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the death of state Sen. Christopher Jackman and was elected to a full term in Nov. 1991.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 68 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Fred Theemling Jr. He was re-elected in 1994 with 71 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Fernando Alonso. He was re-elected in 1996 with 78 percent of the vote against Republican Carlos Munoz. In 1998, Menendez was re-elected, defeating Republican Theresa de Leon with 80 percent of the vote.

He was re-elected in 2000 and 2002 with 78 percent of the vote.
