Biography:

Candice Miller was born on May 7, 1954, in St. Clair Shores, located on the shore of Lake St. Clair north of Detroit. She grew up working in her father's marina in nearby Harrison Township and became an avid boater herself. But she was also interested in local tax issues and politics, and in 1979, she won a seat on Harrison Township's Board of Trustees.

The next year, she won the race to become Harrison Township's supervisor, at age 25 the youngest person and first female to hold that post. She was re-elected three times, then won a race for Macomb County treasurer.

In 1994, she ran for secretary of state against incumbent Democrat Richard Austin, who had held the office since 1970. Once again, she was the first woman to ever hold the job. She was elected to the U.S. House in 2002.

She is married to retired National Guard Col. Donald Miller and has one adult daughter from a previous marriage.
