Alan Mollohan was elected to the U.S. House in 1982 with 53 percent of the vote, defeating Republican state chairman John McCuskey.
He was re-elected in 1990, defeating Howard Tuck with 67 percent of the vote. He was unchallenged for re-election in 1992. He was re-elected in 1994, defeating Republican Sally Rossy Riley with 70 percent of the vote. He was unopposed in 1996.
In 1998 he was re-elected, defeating Libertarian Richard Kerr with 85 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2000 with 85 percent of the vote.
In 2002, he was re-elected without major opposition.
