Biography:

Bob Ney was born in Wheeling, W.Va., raised in Bellaire, Ohio, and lives in St. Clairsville, Ohio. He graduated in 1972 from St. John's High School in Bellaire. He attended Ohio State University's branch campus in Belmont County before transferring to OSU's main campus in Columbus. He received a bachelor's degree in education from Ohio State in 1976.

Ney worked at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, taught English in Iran, served as Bellaire safety director and worked as the health and education program manager of the Ohio Office of Appalachia. He served in the state Legislature, 1980-82, then managed a home security company in Saudi Arabia before being appointed to the Ohio Senate in January 1984. He was re-elected later in 1984, 1988 and 1992.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1994.

Ney has two children from a previous marriage. He and his second wife, Elizabeth, have no children.


Past Campaigns:

Bob Ney was elected state representative in 1980 and lost the seat in 1982. He was appointed state senator in January 1984 and ran successful Senate campaigns in 1984, 1988 and 1992.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 1994, defeating Democrat Greg DiDonato with 53 percent of the vote. In 1996, he was re-elected with 50 percent of the vote against Democrat Robert Burch. Ney was re-elected in 1998, defeating Burch with 60 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2000, defeating Marc Guthrie, with 65 percent of the vote. He was unopposed for re-election in 2002. Ney had no opposition in Ohio's March 2, 2004, primary election for the 18th District.
