Biography:

Charles W. Norwood Jr., was born in Valdosta, Ga., and lives in Evans, Ga. He received a bachelor's degree in 1964 from Georgia Southern University and a dental degree in 1967 from Georgetown University dental school. Norwood served in the Army for two years, earning two bronze stars. He began his dental practice in Augusta, Ga., in 1969 and sold it in 1994 to run for Congress.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1994.

Norwood and his wife, Gloria, have two grown sons.


Past Campaigns:

Charlie Norwood defeated one-term incumbent Democratic Rep. Don Johnson with 66 percent of the vote in 1994. He was re-elected to the U.S. House in 1996 with 52 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat David Bell.

In 1998, Norwood defeated Democrat Denise Freeman with 60 percent of the vote. He defeated her again in 2000 with 63 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2002, facing only token opposition.
