Biography:

Jim Nussle was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and resides in Manchester, Iowa. He received a bachelor's degree in political science, international studies and economics from Luther College. He received a law degree from Drake University Law School. He worked as a volunteer on the 1980 campaign of Republican Rep. Tom Tauke. Nussle joined Tauke's congressional staff in 1982 as a staff assistant.

In 1985, he went to work as staff assistant to Republican Gov. Terry Branstad. He was the local organizer for President Bush's Iowa caucus campaign in 1988. He moved to Manchester in 1986 and opened a private law practice. He was elected Delaware County attorney in 1986. Nussle was elected to the U.S. House in 1990, and re-elected for six consecutive terms.

Nussle is chairman of the Budget Committee and serves as a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee. He serves on the committee's Trade Subcommittee.

Nussle has two children from a previous marriage. He married lobbyist Karen Chiccehitto in 2001. They met with the House ethics committee before marrying to avoid the appearance of any conflict of interest.


Past Campaigns:

Jim Nussle was elected to the U.S. House in 1990, defeating Democrat Eric Tabor with just over 50 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 1992 with 51 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat David Nagle.

He defeated Nagle again in 1994 with 56 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 1996 with 53 percent of the vote against Democrat Donna Smith.

In 1998, Nussle defeated Democrat Rob Tully with 55 percent of the vote. He was elected county attorney in 1986.

He was unopposed in the 2000 Republican Primary for the 2nd District. Nussle won re-election with 55 percent of the vote.

He defeated Bettendorf Mayor Ann Hutchinson for the new 1st District in 2002.
