Biography:

Jon Porter was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and grew up in Humboldt, Iowa, In high school he was twice elected class president and worked with his parents and older brother in the family business.

He attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, and later moved to southern Nevada.In 1982, Porter became an agent for Farmers Insurance Group, and is currently one of Farmers' top-ranking district managers. He supervises more than 30 Farmers Insurance agents throughout southern Nevada. He also has been active in the Southern Nevada Water Authority.

Porter and his wife, Laurie, a teacher and librarian, have two grown children.


Past Campaigns:

Jon Porter's political career began in 1983, when he was elected to serve on the Boulder City Council. He was elected mayor in 1987, and in 1994 was elected to the state Senate. He was re-elected in 1998.

He ran unsuccessfully for the House in 2000. In 2002, he was elected to the newly drawn district with 54 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Dario Herrera.
