Biography:

Mike Rogers was born in Saks, Ala., and still resides there. After receiving his law degree from Birmingham School of Law, Rogers spent three years in a general practice law firm before starting his own firm. With nine attorneys, it now ranks as the largest in Anniston, Ala.

Rogers began representing central Alabama's 36th district in the state House in 1994 and was elected minority leader in 1998. He had long been involved in county politics as well, serving for 20 years on the Calhoun County Republican Committee. When Rogers was elected to the Calhoun County Commission at age 28, he became the first Republican and the youngest person ever to serve there.

He first considered running for Congress against outgoing GOP Rep. Bob Riley in 1996, but Riley reportedly talked him out of it, assuring him he would only stay for six years.

Riley successfully ran for governor, kept his word and enthusiastically endorsed the Rogers campaign _ a major boost from a popular politician. In 2002, Rogers narrowly defeated his Democratic opponent in the general election to succeed Riley, winning just over 50 percent of the vote.

He and his wife, Beth, have three children: Emily, Evan and Elliott.
