Biography:
Duane Sand grew up on small farms in North Dakota and Minnesota. He enlisted in the Navy in 1984 and later enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where he graduated in 1990.
After he was discharged from service in 1999, he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democratic incumbent Kent Conrad.
Sand was recalled into the Navy in 2001, serving on a submarine in Bangor, Wash., and spending 10 months at the Pentagon in Washington. He was released from active duty in 2003.
Sand owns a restaurant, motel and several apartment buildings. He and his wife, Holly, have two children.
Past Campaigns:
Duane Sand won the 2002 Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Kent Conrad, but lost to Conrad in the general election, winning only 39 percent of the vote.
