Biography:

H. James Saxton was born in Scranton, Pa., and resides in Mount Holly, N.J. He received a bachelor's degree in education in 1965 from Pennsylvania's East Stroudsburg State College and did graduate work in elementary education at Temple University.

He spent three years as a public school teacher, then owned Jim Saxton Realty Co. from 1968 to 1985. He served in the New Jersey Assembly from 1976 to 1981 and in the New Jersey Senate from 1982 to 1984.

Saxton was elected to the U.S. House in a November 1984 special election to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Republican Rep. Edwin B. Forsythe, and won a general election at the same time for a full term.

Saxton is divorced and has two children.


Past Campaigns:

Jim Saxton was elected to the U.S. House in 1984 with 61 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat James B. Smith. He was re-elected to three consecutive terms, defeating Smith again in 1990 with 69 percent of the vote.

He won re-election in 1992 with 62 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Brian Hughes. He was re-elected in 1994 with 66 percent of the vote, defeating Smith once again. In 1996, he was re-elected with 64 percent of the vote against Democrat John Leonardi.

Saxton was re-elected in 1998, defeating Democrat Steven Polansky with 62 percent of the vote. In 2000, he was re-elected with 57 percent of the vote.

He was re-elected in 2002 with 65 percent of the vote.

Saxton served in the New Jersey Assembly, 1976-81; and the state Senate, 1982-84.
