Jan Schakowsky won 45 percent of the vote in the three-way Democratic primary in the 9th congressional district in March 1998.
She had an easier time of it in the general election, defeating Republican Herbert Sohn with 75 percent of the vote to win the seat opened up by the retirement of Democratic U.S. Rep. Sidney Yates.
She won re-election in 2000 with 76 percent of the vote.
She was re-elected in 2002 with 70 percent of the vote.
