Biography:

Winsome Sears was born March 11, 1964, in Kingston, Jamaica and lives in Newport News, Va.

She came to the United States in 1970, at age 6, and lived in the Bronx, N.Y., with her grandmother and graduated early and with honors from Adlai Stevenson High School there.

Devastated at age 18 by her grandmother's death, her search for direction and discipline led her into the Marine Corps in 1983. Within three years, she had become a corporal and an electrician.

By the time Sears left the service in 1986, she had become a single mother and then met her future husband, Terence. Both wanted to make their home on the East Coast, but not New York, so they settled in his hometown of Norfolk.

Sears earned a degree in English from Old Dominion University in 1992. She worked as a literacy volunteer in 1994, and for the regional Chamber of Commerce in Hampton Roads from 1994 to 1996 before going to work in the office of then-state Sen. J. Randy Forbes, who now represents Virginia's 4th District in Congress.

Past Campaigns:

Winsome Sears was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2003, winning her only race for elected office.
