Biography:

Jose E. Serrano was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, and resides in the Bronx, N.Y. Serrano and his family moved to New York from Puerto Rico in 1950.

He graduated from Dodge Vocational High School in 1961 and completed courses at the American Institute of Banking and at Lehman College.

He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1964 to 1966. He was chairman of the South Bronx Community Corporation and an employee of the community school board from 1969 to 1974.

Serrano was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1974 and served there until 1990. In March 1990, Serrano won a special election to replace U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia, who resigned when convicted on extortion and conspiracy charges in the Wedtech military contracting scandal. Serrano was re-elected to a full term in November 1990. He was re-elected in 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002.

Serrano and his wife, Mary, have five children.


Past Campaigns:

Jose E. Serrano was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1974 and was re-elected to seven consecutive terms. He was elected to the U.S. House in a March 1990 special election with 93 percent of the vote over Simeon Golar.

He was re-elected to a full term in November 1990 with 93 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Joseph Chiavaro. He was re-elected in 1992 with 91 percent of the vote.

Serrano faced no Republican challenger in 1994. In 1996, he was re-elected with 96 percent of the vote against Republican Rodney Torres. He won re-election in 1998, defeating Republican Thomas Bayley with 95 percent of the vote. He defeated Republican Aaron Justice in 2000 with 95 percent of the vote.

He defeated Republican Frank Dellavalle in 2002 with 92 percent of the vote.
