In 1990, Brad Sherman defeated Claude Parrish for a seat on the California Board of Equalization by a margin of 52 percent to 38 percent. He won re-election in 1994 by defeating Ernie Dynda 54 percent to 36 percent.
In 1996, he was elected to the U.S. House, defeating Republican Rich Sybert with 42 percent of the vote. Sherman was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Randy Hoffman with 58 percent of the vote.
In 2000, Sherman defeated Republican Jerry Doyle with 66 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2002.
