Biography:

Brad Sherman was born in Monterey Park, Calif., and lives in Sherman Oaks, Calif. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and public policy from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1974, and a law degree from Harvard in 1979.

His family has been active in politics, particularly his mother, Lane Sherman, a grassroots Democratic political activist who has helped Sherman in his campaigns.

Before he was elected to the state Board of Equalization in 1990 and again in 1994, Sherman was an accountant. He chaired the board from 1991 to 1995.

Sherman also served on the board of California Common Cause from 1985-1989. He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1996 and re-elected in 1998.

Sherman is single and has no children.


Past Campaigns:

In 1990, Brad Sherman defeated Claude Parrish for a seat on the California Board of Equalization by a margin of 52 percent to 38 percent. He won re-election in 1994 by defeating Ernie Dynda 54 percent to 36 percent.

In 1996, he was elected to the U.S. House, defeating Republican Rich Sybert with 42 percent of the vote. Sherman was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Randy Hoffman with 58 percent of the vote.

In 2000, Sherman defeated Republican Jerry Doyle with 66 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2002.
