Biography:
Robert Simmons was born in New York City and resides in Stonington, Conn. He received a bachelor's degree from Haverford College in 1965 and a master's degree from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in 1979.
Simmons enlisted in the Army in 1965, graduated from officer candidate school in 1967 and spent 19 months in Vietnam, where he was awarded two bronze stars. He was an operations officer for the Central Intelligence Agency from 1969 to 1979.
Simmons was on the staff of Sen. John H. Chafee, R-R.I., and was staff director for the Select Committee on Intelligence from 1981 to 1985. Simmons is a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and was the commander of the 434th Military Intelligence Detachment in New Haven, Conn.
Simmons served in the Connecticut House from 1991 to 2001. He and his wife, Heidi Simmons, have two grown children.
