Michael Simpson was elected to the Idaho House in 1984 after a district judge ordered a 20 percent increase in the number of legislative seats to resolve a redistricting dispute. He was easily re-elected afterwards.
In 1998, Simpson won a heated four-way primary for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Rep. Dirk Kempthorne and then defeated former four-term Democratic Congressman Richard Stallings by 8 percentage points in the general election.
He faced no opposition in the primary and only token opposition in the general election in both 2000 and 2002. He won re-election with 71 percent of the vote in 2000 and 69 percent in 2002.
