Louise Slaughter served in the New York Assembly, 1982-86, and in the Monroe County (N.Y.) Legislature, 1976-79. Slaughter was elected to the U.S. House in 1986 with 51 percent of the vote, ousting incumbent Republican Rep. Fred Eckert.
She was re-elected to two consecutive terms, defeating Republican John Regan in 1990 with 59 percent of the vote. She won re-election in 1992 with 55 percent of the vote, defeating Republican William Polito. She defeated Republican Renee Davison in 1994 with 57 percent of the vote.
In 1996, she was re-elected with 57 percent of the vote against Republican Geoffrey Rosenberger. Slaughter was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Dick Kaplan with 64 percent of the vote. Slaughter defeated Republican Mark Johns in the 2000 general election with 65 percent of the vote.
She defeated Republican Henry Wojtaszek in the 2002 election with 62 percent of the vote.
